Length of Prior Condition and Sex The difference between the sexes, when considering the length they have had a condition prior to starting a Reiki treatment, is quite marked. Females dominate in all the length of prior condition bands. This dominance however, is more pronounced away from the extremes of length of prior condition. The sexes are more equally matched at the lowest and highest values for the length of prior condition. To some extent therefore the length of prior condition is determined by sex.
![]() Length of Prior Condition and Age For the prior length of condition age would seem to be an important factor. In general terms the oldest age group tend to have had their condition longer before trying Reiki. The mid age group, dominating all categories, are much more evenly spread while the youngest age group are spread to the extremes of the length of prior condition range.
![]() Length of Prior Condition and Session Numbers in Treatment There seems to be a relationship between the length of prior condition before starting a Reiki treatment and the mean number of sessions in the reiki treatment. The session numbers rise steadily from with increased length of prior condition, from –1 month to 13-36 months. Interestingly after 13-36 months there is a steady fall in the session numbers.
![]() Length of Prior Condition and Healing Progress Clearly there is a relationship between the prior length of condition and healing progress. The healing goal achieved band is highest (85%) with the shortest prior condition times (less than 1 month). This decreases steadily across successively longer band times to its lowest(16.7%) for the 13-36 month band. Interestingly the last two length of prior condition band show this percentage rising again. This situation, of the healing goal achieved band is reflected in the steady increase and then decrease of the lower levels of success.
![]() Number of Sessions in Treatment and Age The below 18 age band shows a tentative relationship between the number of sessions undertaken and age.
![]() Number of Sessions in Treatment and Months of Prior Condition A clear relationship does seem to exist between number of sessions in the Reiki treatment and the months of condition prior to starting Reiki even if it is more of a curve than a straight line.
![]() A when banded, the relationship is clearly seen to exist between the numbers of new clients and clients that return for more treatment.
![]() A small increase in the numbers, of those claiming to become relaxed and calm and those who felt the reiki energy, was noted when compared with the number of sessions comprising a reiki treatment.
![]() When considering the two variables, number of sessions in treatment and initially feeling worse, it seems to show that the chances of initially feeling worse are greater if more sessions are necessary in the complete Reiki treatment.
![]() A distinct relationship is seen between the healing goal achieved and the number of sessions. In this, the achievement of the healing goal decreases with the increasing number of sessions necessary to achieve this state. At the same time as the healing goal achieved decreases, the other healing outcomes increase as a proportion of the total.
![]() It can be seen that there is an increased tendency for unexpected healing with an increased number of sessions in the Reiki treatment. This occurs up to and including those treatments with 12 sessions. Beyond twelve sessions the level of unexpected healing is maintained.
![]() When looking at the relative areas of the three age bands as a depiction of their proportion of the total sample (histogram 1) it can clearly be seen that the 18-59 age group dominates with the above 59 age group second and the below 18 age group having a relatively insignificant sample share. In both the first and second histogram versions of healing progress and sex a similar trend is noted. Both the below 18 years and above 59 year bands show a similar trend which is that the lower success levels claim the higher proportion of the sample. Each successive healing progress band, away from the least successful, shows a lower percentage of the sample. The exception to this general trend, mentioned above, is with the 18 to 59 year band. Here, with the exception of the no progress band there is shown a stead increase in sample proportion from little progress to goal achieved.
![]() ![]() Apart for the no progress band the other bands show a steady decrease starting from little progress to goal achieved.
![]() Between little progress and goal achieved the numbers of sessions necessary fall with each successive band. Clients achieving no progress continue for a surprising number of treatments before stopping.
![]() The numbers of clients becoming relaxed and calm is very high. The trend in this category however, from no progress(87.5) to goal achieved(100.0) was steadily upwards across all categories. For those clients that slept for a part of some sessions there was no difference between no healing progress and a little progress. The other categories of healing success were markedly higher showing more than double that of the lower categories. For those who felt the reiki energy in some form half of those who made no progress felt nothing. Of the other categories, feeling the reiki energy was a very high occurrence.
![]() In general terms there is an indication of a relationship between healing progress achieved and initially feeling worse. The highest likelihood for feeling worse is with those making no progress. There is a tendency for this to lower as more progress is made. However the band labelled some progress does not quite fit in to the pattern suggested by the others though it is lower than that for no progress.

Reiki receivers returning after a previous treatment.
Range of medical conditions and symptoms disclosed.
Length of prior condition before starting a Reiki treatment.
Experiences during a Reiki treatment.
Number of sessions in a Reiki treatment.
Progress made towards the healing goal.
Feeling worse after their first Reiki session
Unexpected healing.
Age: Males wait longer before Reiki treatment commences, have a longer number of Reiki sessions, sleep more often during the Reiki sessions, are less likely to achieve their healing goal, but are more likely to have unexpected healing of another undisclosed condition, are more likely to feel worse after their first Reiki session and are more likely to return for further Reiki treatment
This study set out to try to pin down some of the things that traditionally are said about Reiki but on which there has been no published work. It is based on actual case notes of those involved completed during the working day. As such, in order to increase the likelihood of client participation in this study the information collected had to be organised to maximise information while minimising the intrusion into the clients life. Any future study needs to include social position as well as age and sex. In the present study it is felt that the age related outcomes could as easily reflect social status and the availability of money. Though growing year on year the size of sample is still quite small for some areas of information being gathered. Hopefully time will overcome this issue. Despite the above limitations this study is organised well enough to form a reasonably solid basis for further research into Reiki. |
