The Founder
Dr. Mikao Kyoho Usui [1865-1926] developed what is now known as Reiki, towards the end of the 19th Century. Dr. Usui was a Japanese philosopher who searched for understanding of how the great teachers of the main world religions had been able to heal. He spent many years searching and had many disappointments until, after a long period of fasting, he was given understanding about healing. He first used Reiki on himself and then tried it out on his own family. Following personal success, he opened a clinic in 1922 for healing and ran workshops to share his knowledge. He died of a stroke in 1926 aged 62. Dr. Usui's students carried on his work.
Reiki in the west today comes, almost entirely, from the teaching of Mrs Takata who was taught by Dr. Hayashi, who was one of Dr. Usui's students.

The Title
Reiki is written/drawn as a kanji. I use an ancient kanji. The word Reiki, pronounced 'ray-key', is written as a Japanese kanji which has two parts. The top part is 'Rei' meaning universal or spiritual and the lower part 'Ki' meaning energy or power. Literally, Reiki means 'universal energy' or 'spiritual power'. This title, now in common use, has taken over from the earlier title of 'The Usui Method of Natural Healing'.

The Energy
The aim of Reiki is to restore balance. To be 'unbalanced' is to be unwell. The Reiki energy tries to remove any blocks to achieving balance. It always works for what is good or best for the receiver. Reiki cannot be misused and can only do good. Reiki always comes in the quantity needed at that time and for the greatest good of the receiver. The energy comes in response to need and not want. Words used in an attempt to describe Reiki energy are love, compassion, nurture, support and peace.

The System
Reiki does not depend on any particular belief system. It is generally seen as an holistic form of healing but a Reiki receiver can ask for Reiki for a specific need. Reiki comes in response to a receiver's 'need' rather than 'want' and may make other changes to that expected or requested. Reiki wants the whole body to be well.

The Practitioner
A Reiki practitioner is any person who has been attuned to the 'universal energy'. The main purpose of the practitioner is to tap into the 'universal energy' and to pass it on to the receiver. Reiki reaches the receiver usually through the practitioner's hands when put on or near a client's body. A Reiki practitioner tries to directly influence a condition and also 'kick start' the receiver's body into healing itself.
Anyone can become a Reiki practitioner. No special skills or abilities are needed.

The Cost
In a private practice Reiki can prove expensive, particularly if there are a large number of sessions. Please make sure that you know the cost before starting the first session. One way of reducing the cost of lengthy treatment, other than negotiating the fee with the Reiki practitioner, is to be trained to do Reiki.

Choosing a Practitioner
You are the person who is responsible for you own health. You are the only one who should decide whether or not to have a Reiki session, why, and with whom. You are the one who decides whether Reiki is working and whether to continue. Do not allow yourself to be pushed into anything.
A receiver of Reiki must have a need (reason for receiving Reiki) and feel comfortable and safe with the practitioner they have chosen.
Before a Reiki session starts the Reiki practitioner should explain a little about what Reiki is and what will happen during the Reiki session. Please ask any questions or air your concerns at this point. You must feel that the practitioner you have chosen is the one meant for you. If this is not the case then look for another Reiki practitioner, there are plenty about. Do not start any Reiki session if you are not completely happy with what you are doing.

Starting the Reiki Session
The Reiki practitioner will ask you to remove footwear and glasses before you lay down on a treatment couch. Some people have difficulty getting on and off a treatment couch. If this is the case, please discuss this with the Reiki practitioner. When lying on your back please make sure that you are comfortable with pillow support under your head, at the back of your knees and anywhere that you need support. It is important that you are comfortable. Usually a light blanket or other material, to keep you warm, will be placed over you to cover everything except your neck and head. Sometimes the practitioner will place or pass their hands above your body (5 to 15cms above).

The Reiki Session
The practitioner will then stand or sit with eyes closed to set their 'intent'. This means that they ask for the Reiki energy to come through them to you, for your benefit. At this point tell yourself, silently, what it is you want Reiki to do for you. What it is that you want to change or improve within yourself. After this just relax. During the session the Reiki practitioner will place their hands, for a time, lightly on or near your body. The practitioner might want to put their hands behind your head. If so, please do not try to help by raising your head. It is your job to relax and nothing more. If you are able, you may be asked to turn onto your front during the session. The pillow behind your knees will then be moved to under your ankles. Please ask for extra or fewer pillows under your head if you need it. If you think that you would like further support, please tell the practitioner. Your job is to relax.
The positions and timing of the positions a practitioner may change from session to session. It is possible for more than one practitioner to pass Reiki to you at the same time, during the session. The effect of this practice is that you receive more Reiki in less time.

Ending the Reiki Session
At the end of a Reiki session the Reiki practitioner will quietly ask you to sit up, when you are ready. Take your time, there is no rush. You usually will then be given some water to drink. Please drink it as it helps your body to adjust itself after receiving Reiki. It would also help the Reiki practitioner if you could share any experiences you have had during the session. If you have any questions or concerns about the Reiki session then please share these with the Reiki practitioner.
*Please note - Any medical or other condition, which has become chronic and longstanding will take a long time to be overcome. Any condition, which is caused or aggravated by something you do, or something in your environment, will limit your progress towards whatever 'healing' goal you have set.

Reiki Training
Anyone can become a Reiki practitioner. You do not have to have any special gifts. No qualifications are necessary as your development starts from what you have at the start of the training. Only Reiki masters can carry out Reiki training. This training is delivered in three degrees or levels though the 3rd degree or master training is often split into two parts, these being those of healing and teaching. For historical reasons western Reiki has a number of variants or streams which differ slightly from each other. All these are successful. Shop around as the cost of training can be different with different Reiki masters and different Reiki streams. What is important is the quality of that delivered, the quality of the back up which is really available and whether you think a particular master is the one who should be training you. Take time to talk, preferably face to face, to the master offering training, asking any questions you like. It should feel right to you. If you are in any doubt then carry on looking. I feel that this 'feel right' factor is important.

Poor Healing Progress
Some Reiki receivers seem to have a more limited response to the Reiki energy than others. There may be many reasons but the action which can be taken by you includes:-

Options
Questions To Consider
What You Can Do
Finally

Options

  1. Discuss your concerns with your Reiki practitioner.
  2. Move to another Reiki practitioner.
  3. Move onto a different healing discipline.

The key to this situation is what the Reiki receiver wants to do? The Reiki practitioner's role is to encourage the Reiki receiver to make a valid decision based on knowledge.

Questions To Consider
  1. What was your original medical prognosis? Has your condition stabilized, changed for the better or worse?
  2. Was a base line or starting point established before the Reiki sessions started? If you do not have a starting point how will you know if you have improved? Has your actual progress been missed or misinterpreted?
  3. Are you focused on the big miracle cure only and being unrealistic in your expectations?
  4. Are there any factors which might limit your progress or complicate or aggravate your condition? Is there something in your environment preventing progress? Is there something from your past which is limiting your progress? Are you or the Reiki practitioner doing something which is unhelpful?
  5. Is there a block to progress stemming from within yourself? Are you limiting your own progress by identifying with your condition for the security this gives? Are you using Reiki as a crutch rather than going for progress? Are you abdicating responsibility for your own health? Is your own intent unfocussed or too big? Are you confusing your 'want' rather with your 'need'? Do you have a past trauma still unresolved? Or perhaps a psychological condition which is limiting your progress?
  6. Could there be physical limitations to progress? Do you have tissue and nerve damage caused by the condition but not in itself is not the condition being treated?
  7. Has the possible length of treatment necessary to make a healing difference been misinterpreted? Sessions can and need to be sustained for long periods and not just contained within the usual one hour. Sessions can even be spread over months, even years, rather than just a few sessions.
  8. Is there something more to be done by you? Is there something that you need to experience, linked to your condition? Do you have a new direction to take? Do you have to reach a personal understanding about your life or condition? Are there question(s) you have to ask?
  9. Is the practitioner influencing the outcome of limited progress by trying too hard; being fixated on success; expecting or demanding too much? Is the Reiki practitioner's session organisation, attitude or demeanor getting in the way of healing progress? Are you or your Reiki practitioner rushed or unsettled in the way either of you prepare for the healing session?

What You Can Do
  1. Set specific, small step goals for yourself so that you can more easily recognise progress.
  2. Increase the frequency of your Reiki sessions.
  3. Ask for longer Reiki sessions.
  4. Ask for a greater number of Reiki practitioners taking part in your sessions.
  5. Become a Reiki practitioner yourself. Then you can give yourself Reiki as and when you need it.
  6. Prepare yourself for your Reiki sessions. Prayer, meditation, Qigong etc., diet and general exercise have all been found to be useful.
  7. Make a 'life focus' change/enhancement which makes demands on yourself rather than dwelling on your own condition. Increased involvement with family, friends, church or other spiritual activity, community organisations, education or hobbies have all been found to be useful.
  8. Become an observer of yourself and what you do. Think about this with the view to possibly making changes in your outlook, how you see yourself and your personal environment. For example; I am an M.S. sufferer, changed to this body suffers from M.S. I am going to be more positive. My condition is not my fault. My health is a more dominant aspect in my life, not my illness. I can change my environment to make it more pleasant to live in. I now take responsibility for my own health and stop pushing this on to others.

Finally
There is a time when healing, even the miracle, is appropriate but this is not always the case. Sometimes there is no 'cure'. Sometimes you may have to learn to understand and cope with your condition. You might even need to prepare yourself for death. Reiki is useful even in this last process.
